We used to do estimates for free. We stopped. Driving out, spending an hour or two at the house, and giving away a real diagnosis costs more than $69 to deliver, so the fee isn't a profit center, it just keeps the visit honest.

For $69 you get a full inspection, not a glance at the one thing you called about. We check your water pressure. We look at the water heater, the angle stops, the exposed lines, and whatever else you want to ask about. Then you get options in writing, including the cheaper option when a cheaper option is real. Decide not to move forward and it's $69, and we're not going to hound you afterward.

• Expansion tank, catch pan, earthquake strapping. Code items on a water heater install, and each one carries cost.
• Relocating the unit. Moving a water heater means new gas, water, and venting runs.
• Recirculation pump. Optional, and the largest single add-on on a water heater job.
• Water softener. Orange County water is hard enough that a lot of homes here want one. Northern California mostly doesn't bother.

Why the national names cost more

Plenty of homeowners figure a small shop is a risk, figuring they'll call in five years and the company will be gone, so they dial one of the big names instead. The logic doesn't hold.
